Okay, time to put on your reading caps -

-- here's what Alena sends --

"Thanks again, so very much, for agreeing to make a page for my foster baby, Buddy Jack (rescued from Brooklyn CACC by CoCo and then fostered temporarily by Benni ).

I've attached the best pictures I've been able to get so far. I'm really sorry that it took so long - I went through three disposable cameras (hence the possessed green eyes look) before begging to borrow a friend's digital and, with law school in between, it's just taken longer to get everything together than I would have liked. I'm going to try and get a hold of the digital again and get some smile pictures minus the eye reflections, because he has one of the best!!
"

"I'm not great at writing bios, but here's what I would say about Bud:

He's wonderful!! He is smart, responsive, affectionate, super-cuddly, and eager to please. He came to us knowing to sit for food and from there his strong food drive has made him so easy to train that he already knows how to heel, come, and sit on-lead, and obedience class doesn't start until Saturday!!  From the start he has also responded to 'wait' before crossing the street, and will slow down if you say 'easy' when he's going too fast down stairs or on his walk.   Best of all, 99% of the time he will come to the same side of a tree or other obstacle as you're on, so you don't have to tangle with getting unwrapped around stuff - so great!  He is also the most friendly, outgoing dog I have ever met. "

"I carry hotdog slices with me everywhere to try and compete with his fascination with everything around him and, because of his high food drive, it's working extremely well.

Walking through Riverside Park, he would bounce up to greet everyone we pass, especially people on benches and groups standing around chatting, if I weren't on the other end of the flexi-lead charming him with cookies.  Thank goodness, he does not jump up; instead he kind of cuddles onto people feet and kisses their toes!  He has a fan club among the families that stoop on the stairs in front or our apartment building, and visits them on our way out and back from walks - he's just extremely social, showers visitors with attention and loves everyone. "

"He's the same with other dogs: extremely interested in them, enthusiastic and friendly, HOWEVER, his behavior is technically dominant, tho lacking intent and self-awareness (as though he doesn't undertand that his pushy/forward behavior could be offensive or intimidating to other dogs).  While he does not seem to be trying to provoke or challenge, his disrespectful overexhuberance could EASILY get him into trouble with a dominant dog, so we just avoid interaction whenever possible, (which is fine in light of our general goal of becoming more neutral to our environment!), hence the work on heel and come."

"He's now to the point where he just kind of looks at other dogs if they're far enough away, and consistently heels and comes when called, even right next to them, because he loves his hotdogs. We're also working on not barking at other dogs if they pass by when we're standing still, but that's not so perfect just yet and is part of the reason we're so excited to start obedience classes ;).

As far as energy level is concerned, I think he's medium, but I grew up with dobermanns, so others might consider him medium-high :). We go for a 2-mile walk every day, and then out for shorter ones so he can relieve himself and with that he's an angel in our tiny apartment, content to chew bones and snuggle on the sofa. Plus, I recently had to go away for a week, and for those 7 days, he was basically only getting out for 10-15 minutes to go to the bathroom every few hours, and he made it about five days before starting to show signs of cabin fever, so he may very well be able to tolerate less exercise, especially as he gets older. "

"Above all, he wants attention and lots of it!  I think he would be in absolute heaven as a companion for another dog of the same or greater size and age/energy level, or a more mature dog that was tolerant enough to act as a role model, so that he would have a play mate and never be alone/ignored (I am a total dog person, but even I can't pet him ALL day and he really wishes I could ;).

He would also do well as the only dog in the home, so long as the people were prepared to satisy his considerable social needs (he's happy with us, but he's our baby and we are on the sofa cuddling with him every moment that we're home).  He has great nerves - nothing bothers him, he recovers instantly from negative experiences, is not afraid of anything and is very trusting and resilient.  He has low prey drive, judging from his minimal interest in the squirrels in the park, so would probably do fine with cats, and should be wonderful with children as he's got no body sensitivity, is constantly seeking attention, and tolerates all the goofy things that kids would do, like dancing with him, playing with his lips, hiding him under blankets, etc.

He is a total ragdoll and will lie on his back in your lap or any other position you cuddle him into - as long as his body is touching yours, he's content.  He let me give him a bath the second day I had him, and has tried to climb into the shower with me every morning since!"

"I believe he is housetrained (when we're out of the house and overnight, we babygate him in the kitchen and have never found any surprises upon arriving home, but have never tested him out by leaving him loose in the apartment).

He is not bothered in the least that he is not allowed in the bedroom (my 2 house rabbits are in there and want nothing to do with him), tho he will bark if excluded from the family room when we're home, except when he knows it's time for 'puppy-nite-nite.'"

"He has a soft, raspy bark, tho, so it's no big deal even at its most serious. He has never showed any food aggression (he's not a fool and will try to play keep away, but has never once even curled a lip in the many times I've tested this - even on marrow bones).  He has never shown any aggression, period.

We've had him a little over a month, and he's just begun to woof once when the doorbell rings/he hears something strange in the hall outside, which I believe is both maturity & comfort/settling-in, tho he did go on Planned Parenthood patrol the other night when we passed a couple in the woods, and would not stop barking until they came out and said hello, so he may be becoming protective of me (or maybe it was just a fluke).

He has some physical signs of mistreatment: he's missing hair around his neck where it looks like a collar started to grow in and is also missing a few little patches on his tail, but no one has ever noticed them and, otherwise, his coat is in great condition. He also has callouses on his elbows and hocks, as though he was left on concrete or some other hard surface without a bed, but he's making up for that on our sofa these days :).  He's approx. 2 years old, about 18 inches tall, 45 pounds, neutered and, best of all... he doesn't have dog breath!! Not at all!! It's great.

He has gorgeous markings (which I hope you can see in the pix), beautiful eyes and a very expressive face.  Plus, he's got this big smile, which gets comments everywhere and the greatest jaunty little strut of a trot to go with it, that people just find irresistable.  He walks around with an air of confidence like he's been loved every day of his life and loves life right back and, I don't know where he got it, but I get more comments walking around with him than with my mother's world champion dobermanns - so he's got something!!"

"What else... we're feeding Wellness. He loves it. He's not picky at all. When we got him, he barked at us while we were eating but now he doesn't make a peep. He also loves Milkbones, real marrow bones from the butcher, and chicken or turkey hotdogs - really, he'll have whatever you're having and that goes for everything: he'll follow you anywhere, all over playground equipment, through sprinklers, he drinks from the waterfountains in the park and cuddles on the benches.  After a nice walk, he'll lie down next to you at an outdoor cafe and not say a word - he's just the coolest dog!"

Well, I couldn't have said it better myself -- !!

You can oh-so-tell that Buddy Jack is very loved by Alena, and that she's a burgeoning lawyer-in-training -- !! She should have opened her treatise with, "May it please the dog court --" -- !!!

Anyway, what odds this boy has beat -- to have escaped the CACC, to have made it through a maze of foster homes, and finally to be on his way to easy street --

-- to get there, though, he needs just one element -- YOU -- !!!

Interested? Not afraid of commitments? Willing to be a responsible adult with this life?

IF SO, fill out an adoption application above -- !!
