But now after a few weeks being fostered, fed, and treated for his sarcoptic mange, he looks like this:

I will be meeting a volunteer transporter named Debbie in Portland on September 18th, to bring him home to live with me!
Thanks so much to everyone who helped this happen and made donations. (Teena, thank you, and Erica, for the advice) And especially thanks to Kelly (ladyred) for generously covering his neutering and shots and for keeping me posted and in touch with Silvia and Shelter Friend!!
My name is MAX. My Animal ID # is A873966.
I am a male white and black pit bull. The shelter thinks I am about
1 year 6 months old.

I came in the shelter as a STRAY on 09/02/2010 from NY 11206, owner
reason stated was STRAY. .

Reason for New Hope: DISEAS-ILL.

EUTH MEMO
No Euth Memo

Behavior Rating is MILD, Weight 0.0 LBS.
BAR - sneeze, cough, purulent nasal discharge

VOLUNTEER WROTE:
Max is a happy go lucky puppy. I know it says he is a year and a half old but this guy just wants to play, play, play. He has had a check up by the medical staff and they tell us he weighs 54 pounds. Based on observed behavior Max has a good chance of being housetrained. This pup would do well in an active family that has experience with large breed pups. Since Max is such a happy guy with a bunch of energy he would be a better fit with a family with older children. This pup LOVES food and will sit for a treat. It is a well known fact that food motivated dogs are easier to train. So if you like what you see come to the Brooklyn shelter and take Max home. Max?s time at the shelter is limited.

09/08/2010 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION - MODERATE

Stare: 2. Pulls out three times body is loose and wiggly
Sensitivity : 1. Accepts the touch soft body loose and wiggly
Toy Agg: 3. Takes item away with a firm grip does not allow handler to remove
Rawhide Agg: ^^^
Dog to dog: 2. rushes in loose and wiggly becomes pushy

Medical rating was 1 - NORMAL , behavior rating was MILD

So Darryel and I have noticed lately that Champ doesn't have the spunk he used to have (not that he ever had much) and last week he decided he didn't want to eat for a few days (well at least his breakfast or dinner). And, the heat has been harder for him this summer.

Today the vet found that he has a heart murmur (evidently a new one). They did a chest xray which she believes looks normal and his blood work came back normal. My vet thinks he should have an echo done so we have one scheduled for Tuesday.

So my question is - how much do I need to worry about my boy? I thought my own heart was going to give out when she told me about the murmur and possible fluid around the heart.

"PETA's investigator also documented that PLRS employees kicked, threw, grabbed, dropped, and dragged dogs; roughly grabbed and lifted rabbits by their ears; violently threw and slammed cats into cages; and viciously cursed at animals, calling them names such as "asshole," "bitch," and "motherfucker.""

FYI - not all home item destruction in the absence of an owner is separation anxiety. I see this getting tossed around here willy nilly.

If the issue occurs with an hour of the owner leaving and reoccurs one hour prior to estimated return, it is SA. If it is random chewing during the day, after the dog walker comes, etc, it probably isn't SA. It is most likely boredom and the "Hey I can get this chewing in while in PEACE before Mom and Dad come home now.."

Remember, dogs need jobs. If you don't hire them, they'll start their own business(fixed action patterns - feeding, fighting, fleeing, courting).
