Hey guys so I have a few ?s
My foster pup izzy is 5 months old give or take I'm having a weird prob w her EATING DIRT and licking the grass and ground!? My pit jada used to do that as a pup but she only licked the grass if it was wet. Izz licks it alllllll the time and straight loves eating dirt!! I've tried obv removing her frm near the dirt A MILLION time while telling her no. I've also tried re directing her attention to other things such as toys jada or me. But she just finds a new spot to eat. Also like I said she compulsively licks the grass and ground as well. ANY ideas suggestions anything !? Thank u so much |

I recently had a conversation with my trainer regarding Belle and her forriging in the yard/on walks. He had the following suggestions.
1. Decide if it truly is a bad behavior. Being a rescue dog, there is no way of knowing what her before now was like. Her forriging could have been survival, bugs, leaves etc.... I needed to examine if this was my issue or my dogs. 2. There are things you can treat the outer area with that are a deterrent to the dog, but safe but nasty to the dog, hot sauce, bitters. The theory being the yuck taste will deter the nose to the ground licking, forriging. 3. Building a solid leave it. * I decided it was more my issue and chose to ignore it so I have no feedback. We have built a solid leave it and it has worked for us. If she starts to over fixate while out, we implement the leave it. The other re minder he gave was good or bad a behavior that gets a huge amount of attention gets reinforced. If Izzy is getting all your focus for doing as she is that behavior has become powerful. Best of Luck! |

Belle doesnt forrige nearly as much anymore so it will get better! I too had never thought of the survival instinct and it totally made sense to me, nosing in the ground. Keep us posted on how it is going !

I've heard that dogs chew on grass when they have an upset stomach but this seems different. ???

I would try redirecting the behavior, even if you have to do it a million times. This may be an old wives tale but she could be lacking certain vitamins? What's everyone else think???

My dog eats grass a lot, but not dirt. It could be that she thinks it's something to eat, like other people said, a survival thing. Poor baby. Or maybe it is a nutrient thing.
I would have the vet give her some bloodwork to rule anything like that out, and if she's fine, she might stop as she settles in. My dog is a rescue too from a really bad place and she had tons of weird things she did but 2 years later, she's much more like a 'normal' dog. |
